Pre-industrial society describes how people lived before the Industrial Revolution. This big change happened between 1750 and 1850. Before this time, people did not have machines. They did not have tools to do work for many people at once.

Instead, tasks were done by hand or with animals. Life looked different in every part of the world. Each place had its own special culture and history.

Daily life in these societies followed a simple pattern. Most people lived in small villages instead of big cities. A huge amount of the people were peasants. In fact, peasants usually made up about 98% of the population.

Most of these people worked in agriculture. They practiced subsistence agriculture to stay alive. This means they grew food just to meet their own needs. They relied on these crops to survive every day.

There were many different ways these societies worked. Some groups were hunter-gatherer societies. Others used a traditional economy or mercantilism. Some people were nomads or pastoral nomads.

In Europe, people used a system called feudalism. This system organized how people lived and worked together. Even though life was hard, it was very static. This means things did not change very quickly. Most people stayed in the same social classes for a long time.

Communication was a very big challenge back then. People had a hard time talking to other communities. Most people never saw or heard anything beyond their own village. This is called parochialism.

Because of this, knowledge did not spread easily. Later, industrial societies grew much faster. They had faster ways to share information. This helped different cultures learn from one another.

We still use the term pre-industrial today. Scientists use it to talk about the environment. For example, the Paris Agreement was adopted on 12 December 2015.

This agreement aims to limit global warming. It wants to keep heat well below pre-industrial levels. Experts compare our world to those earlier times. They look at temperatures from before the big machines arrived. This helps us understand how our world is changing.
