Technology and society

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Technology and society are deeply linked to each other. This means they influence and create one another in a constant cycle. Since humans first used simple tools, this relationship has never stopped. For example, modern tools like computers have helped change how societies function. In the early twentieth century, people in Imperial Russia developed tektology. This was a new science focused on how things are organized. Today, experts study these mutual impacts in a field called science and technology studies.

Technology works by changing how we live and interact with the world. It starts with basic tools that solve specific problems for people. In prehistoric times, learning to control fire was a huge step. This allowed early humans to cook their food. This change may have even helped human evolution. Later, the invention of the wheel helped humans travel more easily. These tools let people control their environment and move around. As tools became more advanced, they helped create global ways to talk.

History shows us how fast these changes can happen. In the early 1990s, only about 2% to 3% of schools used the internet. By the end of that decade, use grew to 60%. By 2008, nearly 100% of schools used the internet for learning. This shows how quickly a new tool can become a normal part of life. In 1982, a study looked at the future of an electronic world. It predicted that many homes would use two-way video services. This was a very different world before digital tools changed everything.

New technology also changes how we handle money and work. In ancient times, people traded goods like shells or beads. As tools improved, people created more complex ways to trade. Today, large economies rely on superior technology to keep moving. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses used digital tools to keep working. They used things like remote work and 3D printing to adapt. Governments and big companies often pay for this research. In the UK, the government once funded a program to put computers in schools.

Even with all these benefits, technology brings new challenges. Making things can create pollution that hurts the Earth's environment. Social media can also affect how people feel about themselves. Some people experience "Facebook Depression" because they compare their lives to others. This can make them feel less worthy or unhappy. Because of this, people have different ideas about progress. Some groups worry that technology harms the environment or separates people. Others believe that new inventions will always make the human condition better.
