Technology and society

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Technology and society exist in a state of constant inter-dependency. This means they influence and co-produce one another in a continuous cycle. This synergy has existed since humans first utilized simple tools. Modern innovations like the printing press and computers have further shaped how societies function. In the early twentieth century, the science of organization called tektology emerged in Imperial Russia. Today, academics study these mutual impacts through a field known as science and technology studies.

The mechanism of technological impact begins with the development of basic tools. In prehistoric times, the discovery of fire control allowed for cooking. Primatologist Richard Wrangham suggests this change was a spark for human evolution. Later, the Neolithic Revolution and advances in agriculture fundamentally shifted how groups developed into societies. The invention of the wheel allowed humans to travel and control their environments. As tools became more complex, they lessened physical barriers to communication. This led to global interactions through the telephone and the Internet.

Technological development can be categorized by its scale and application. At the simplest level, technology involves basic manual tools. At a higher level, digital technology creates entire worldwide communication systems. This digital shift has changed how we consume media, such as downloading music or watching movies. In education, technology provides students with digital literacy and information literacy. These skills are necessary for the modern workplace.

History shows how rapidly technology can integrate into daily life. In the early 1990s, Internet use in schools averaged only 2% to 3%. By the end of that decade, usage rose to 60%. By 2008, nearly 100% of schools used the Internet for education. A 1982 study by the Institute for the Future predicted an electronic world. It estimated that 40% of American households would have two-way videotex service by the century's end. This shows how quickly an innovation becomes a standard part of the social system.

Technology is also a primary driver of economic development. In ancient history, economics began when simple barter was replaced by deliberate trade. Makers of items like arrowheads could specialize in one craft and trade for other needs. Today, technological advancement and economic growth are closely related. A robust economy generates excess funds that flow back into greater technological use. During the COVID-19 pandemic, firms using advanced digital technology were better prepared. They used remote working, 3D printing, and big data analytics to adapt to disruptions.

Funding for these advancements comes from both government and private sources. Governments invest billions to drive research and development. For example, the UK government funded the Microelectronics Education Programme to provide computers to schools. Many technologies are also driven by military research before they are adapted for civilian use. Private funding is also vital, though it varies by region. In the OECD, industry performs about two-thirds of research and development. However, in countries like Portugal and Mexico, the industry contribution is significantly lower.

Despite these benefits, technology introduces significant social and environmental challenges. Many technological processes produce pollution and deplete natural resources. This can harm the Earth's environment. Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have also altered how people view themselves. Some users experience "Facebook Depression," where comparing lives to others reduces self-worth. Additionally, overuse of technology is linked to sleep deprivation and obesity in adolescents. These issues raise important questions regarding the ethics of technology.

Because of these impacts, different philosophical movements have emerged. Neo-Luddism and anarcho-primitivism criticize technology for harming the environment and alienating people. In contrast, proponents of transhumanism and techno-progressivism believe technological progress improves the human condition. There is also the concept of "appropriate technology." This refers to compromises used by developing nations that have an excess of labor but a scarcity of cash. These debates continue as society weighs the costs against the progress.
