Post-industrial society

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

A post-industrial society is a new stage of development. In this stage, the service sector makes more wealth than manufacturing. Manufacturing is the business of making physical goods. Services include things like teaching, banking, or fixing computers. This shift changes how people spend their time. It also changes what people value most.

This change works through a transition in the economy. Instead of making goods, the economy focuses on providing services. Knowledge becomes a very important form of capital. This means that knowing things is as valuable as owning machines. Producing new ideas is the main way to help the economy grow. Automation and globalization also play a big part. These things make manual labor less common in the workforce. Meanwhile, the value of professional workers starts to grow.

Many thinkers have studied this change over many years. Alain Touraine published a major work on this in 1969. Later, Daniel Bell made the term popular in 1974. He wrote a book called The Coming of Post-Industrial Society. Other thinkers like Ivan Illich also used the term in 1973. Even President Bill Clinton used the term in 1998. He used it to describe how China was growing.

In these societies, experts hold a lot of power. Jobs in the tertiary and quaternary sectors grow very fast. This includes fields like science, IT, and engineering. Because of this, universities and research institutes become very important. They are the places where new experts are made. Many young urban professionals benefit from this new system. They often care about social justice and the environment. Some experts say this can help reduce poverty and inequality.

This new way of life also helps creative people. Artists, musicians, and video game makers find more work. Cities change to become hubs for sharing global information. However, some people worry about these changes. They say it can lead to problems like urban sprawl. This is when cities spread out into low-density areas. Others worry about how we treat our natural resources. Even leaders like Pope Francis have shared concerns about responsibility.
