society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Consumerism is a way of life that focuses on buying many goods and services. In many modern societies, people do not just buy things to meet basic needs. Instead, buying products has become a way to show who we are. It is a part of our culture and our social lives. This phenomenon grew during the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe and the United States. It became very widespread during the 20th century.

This way of life works through a cycle of making and buying. Manufacturers create products based on what people want to buy. In economics, some believe that the choices of consumers should guide how companies work. This idea is called consumer sovereignty. It means that the preferences and choices of buyers control the economy. When many people want the same thing, companies work hard to make it. This creates a system where buying and selling drive the world.

The history of buying luxury items goes back many centuries. In the 1600s, the English economy began to grow through new farming methods. During the 1700s, more people started buying luxury goods like sugar, tea, and coffee. In Britain, sugar consumption grew by 20 times during the 18th century. A man named Josiah Wedgwood became very famous for his pottery. He used new marketing ideas to make his goods popular with many classes of people.

New inventions changed how people shop and how goods are made. The Industrial Revolution allowed factories to produce items in huge amounts. This made products much cheaper so almost anyone could buy them. Later, Henry Ford used assembly lines to make things even faster. In the late 1940s, the television changed everything for advertisers. TV ads used sound and pictures to reach people right in their homes. This encouraged people to buy new products or upgrade things they already owned.

Today, people have many different views about consumerism. Some people worry about the impact of buying too many things. They say that making many disposable goods creates a lot of waste. Using too many natural resources can also lead to climate change. Other people focus on how it affects society and creates inequality. Because of this, some people choose "simple living" instead. They try to live with less to help the planet and stay unique.
