They often sit between the very poor and the very rich. In history, they were known as the middle class. This group grew because they lived in cities. They were not farmers living on the land. They were also not kings or noble lords. Instead, they were merchants and craftsmen. They managed money and goods to help cities grow.

This group grew through a specific way of working. In the 11th century, many people moved into new cities. These cities focused on trade and making things. To protect themselves, workers formed groups called guilds. These guilds helped craftsmen and merchants work together. This was important when lords tried to charge high rents. By the end of the Middle Ages, these people had more power. They often supported kings to keep order in their lands.

History shows how this group changed over time. In the 1700s, the bourgeoisie wanted more personal freedom. They wanted to own property without royal interference. This desire helped spark big events like the French Revolution. During this time, they fought against the old rule of kings. They also pushed for rights like religious and civil liberties. By the 19th century, they became a very strong political force. This helped move society toward modern ways of governing.

Thinkers like Karl Marx studied how this class worked. Marx said the bourgeoisie owned the means of production. This means they owned the factories, tools, and land. Because they owned these things, they could hire workers. These workers were called the proletariat. Marx believed the bourgeoisie used their wealth to stay in control. He also noted they were very good at creating wealth. However, he criticized how they treated the working class.

Today, the word has many different meanings. In some places, it just means the middle class. In other ways, it refers to the rich ruling class. Some people even use the slang word "boujee" today. This word can describe someone acting very fancy or upper-class. Even in old plays, people mocked the bourgeois way of life. For example, Molière wrote a comedy about a man trying to act noble. The word continues to change as our world changes.
