The word proletariat describes a specific group of people in a society. These are people who earn a wage to live. They do not own the tools or buildings used for work. Instead, their main value is their labor power. This is their ability to work and produce things.

In many systems, this group is very important. They are the ones who make the goods we use every day.

In ancient Rome, the word had a different meaning. It described citizens who owned very little property.

Roman leaders used a census to count people and their wealth. Those with very little wealth were called proletarians. This name likely came from the word for offspring. Their main contribution to Rome was their children. These children would grow up to be future Roman citizens.

In the 1800s, the meaning changed again during the industrial age. A thinker named Karl Marx used the term to describe factory workers.

Marx believed these workers were part of an exploited class. He said owners, called the bourgeoisie, held the private property. These owners used machines and factories to make goods. Workers used these tools to earn a salary. Marx argued that workers produced more value than they received in wages. The owners kept the extra wealth as profit.

Marx's ideas were very detailed about how society works. He saw different stages in history, like the feudal state and the capitalist system.

He believed that the struggle between classes moved history forward. He thought the proletariat could unite to change the system. This group included people who worked in many different ways. Some were small shopkeepers, while others were very poor outcasts. Marx believed workers could form unions to gain power. This would help them move toward a socialist society.

Today, we can see how these ideas connect to our world. The way we work and how wealth is shared is still a big topic. We still use terms like wages, profits, and social classes. Many people still think about the balance between workers and owners. Understanding the history of the proletariat helps us see how modern life grew. It shows how people have worked to change their lives for a long time.
