The Gracchi brothers were two famous leaders in the late Roman Republic.

Their names were Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus. They came from a very powerful family in Rome. Their father was a leader named Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. Their mother was Cornelia, who was the daughter of a great general. These brothers wanted to change how Rome worked to help its people. They believed that the poor needed more support from the state. Their ideas changed how people thought about politics and fairness for a long time.

In 133 BC, Tiberius became a leader known as a tribune.

He wanted to fix a problem with land in Italy. He proposed a plan to help poor farmers get their own land. First, he wanted to create a special group called a commission. This group would survey and list all the public land owned by Rome. Tiberius wanted to limit how much land any one person could hold. He suggested a limit of about 500 acres for most people. If a person had two children, they might hold up to 1,000 acres. The extra land would then be given to poor Roman citizens.

Ten years later, his younger brother Gaius also became a tribune.

Gaius wanted to support the work his brother had started. He tried to make the land laws even stronger. He also had many other big ideas to help the people. Gaius wanted to start new Roman colonies outside of Italy. He also wanted to change how juries worked in the courts. He even looked at how the state handled tax contracts. His plans were much broader than the plans made by Tiberius.

History shows that these reforms were not always easy to pass.

Some leaders in the Senate did not like these new laws. They thought the changes were not good for the state. Because of this fighting, both brothers were killed during their time as leaders. Tiberius died in 133 BC during his term. Gaius died shortly after his term ended in 121 BC. Their deaths were very violent and caused a big crisis in Rome. This showed that people were starting to use violence to solve political fights.

Even though the brothers died, their ideas left a big mark.

Most of the laws they passed were not taken away. They stayed in place for a long time. Later, people in different parts of the world looked at them for inspiration. During the French Revolution, some saw them as heroes for the people. Other people saw them as dangerous leaders. Today, scholars study them to understand how the Roman Republic changed. They help us see how laws and land can change a whole country.
