During his time in Spain, Tiberius had a very difficult job. He served as a quaestor, which is a type of officer. His army was surrounded by the Numantines near the city of Numantia. Tiberius had to negotiate a treaty to help his people. This was a hard task because the Roman Senate did not like the treaty. The Senate thought the terms were too easy for the Numantines. They even punished the commander, Mancinus, for the deal.

Tiberius tried to stay out of the trouble. He did not want to lose his political future. This experience showed how hard it was to lead in Rome.

Later, Tiberius became a tribune of the plebs in 133 BC. A tribune was a leader who spoke for the common people. Tiberius noticed a big problem in Rome. He saw that the Roman population seemed to be shrinking. He believed rich families were buying up too much public land. This land was called the ager publicus.

Tiberius wanted to pass a law called the Lex Sempronia agraria. This law would limit how much land one person could hold. He wanted to give the extra land to poor citizens. This would help them farm and live better lives.

Many people in the Senate were very angry about his plan. They were wealthy and did not want to lose their land. To pass his law, Tiberius did things that were not normal. He removed another tribune, Marcus Octavius, from his job. He also tried to use money from a king named Attalus III to pay for the land. This made the Senate think he wanted too much power. They accused him of wanting to be a king.

This tension grew very high in the city.

In 133 BC, the situation became very dangerous. A man named Scipio Nasica led a group of enemies against Tiberius. They started a riot during an election. Tiberius and his supporters were attacked with stones and wooden chairs. Tiberius died during this violent event.

Even though he died, his land laws did not go away. His brother, Gaius, later tried to pass even more reforms. Many historians say Tiberius' death was the start of the end for the Roman Republic. His story shows how much people fought over land and power.
