He was born in a place called Picenum in 106 BC. His father, Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo, was a noble man. Strabo was a powerful leader, but he was also known for being greedy. Young Pompey began his career by fighting in the Social War. He served alongside his father during this time. Later, Pompey helped a leader named Sulla during a civil war. Sulla was very impressed by the young man's skill. Because of these wins, Sulla gave him a special name. He was called Magnus, which means "the Great."

Pompey was a very successful soldier who fought in many different places. He led troops in the Sertorian War in Spain. During this war, he fought a leader named Sertorius. It was a hard job because Sertorius used clever ways to fight. Pompey also fought in the Third Servile War and the Third Mithridatic War. He even fought in Africa and Sicily.

In these battles, he showed he could lead huge armies. Some people even called him a "teenage butcher" because he was so tough. Despite this, he became one of the most important men in Rome. He won many triumphs to celebrate his many victories.

In Rome, being a leader meant holding important jobs. Most people had to follow a set path to reach the top. This path was called the cursus honorum. However, Pompey was so successful that he skipped many of these steps. He was elected as a consul three times. He held this top job in 70, 55, and 52 BC.

A consul was one of the highest officials in the Roman government. His ability to rise so fast showed his great power. He was a member of the noble class in the Senate.

Politics in Rome could be very complicated. In 60 BC, Pompey joined an informal group of three men. This group was called the First Triumvirate. The other two men were Crassus and Julius Caesar.

To make this alliance stronger, Pompey married Caesar's daughter, Julia. This was a way to tie their families together. But things changed after Julia and Crassus both died. Pompey then joined a conservative group in the Senate called the optimates. This shift changed how he worked with other leaders.

Eventually, Pompey and Caesar became rivals for power. This rivalry led to a large civil war. Pompey fought for control of the Roman state. He was defeated at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC.

After the loss, he fled to Egypt to find safety. Sadly, he was killed by the people who served King Ptolemy XIII. His life was full of big changes for Rome. He went from a young soldier to one of the greatest leaders of his time.
