He was born into a noble family called the gens Cornelia. However, his family was very poor when he was born. He spent his youth around actors, dancers, and musicians. He even wrote comedic plays during this time. Later in life, he earned the nickname Felix, which means fortunate. Some people said he was favored by the goddess Venus. This was because he was very lucky in his many battles.

Sulla rose to fame through his skill in war. He first gained attention during the war against King Jugurtha of Numidia. Sulla helped capture the king by working with King Bocchus I. This success made his reputation grow very quickly. He also fought in the Cimbrian War against Germanic tribes. During this time, he worked under a leader named Gaius Marius. Sulla was good at managing supplies for the large armies. He eventually won a Grass Crown for his bravery at the Battle of Nola.

As time passed, Sulla and Marius became rivals. A big fight began over who would lead a war against Mithridates of Pontus. The Senate first gave the command to Sulla. However, political deals caused the Senate to take that command away. Sulla decided to take his army and march on Rome to take control. He used force to remove his political opponents from the city. This was the first time a general had marched on Rome during this era.

Sulla held many important roles in the Roman government. He was elected consul in 88 BC. He also became a dictator, which is a leader with total power. He used this power to make many new laws. These laws were meant to give more power to the Senate. He also wanted to limit the power of the tribunes. After he finished these reforms, he resigned his power in 80 BC. He then served as a regular consul for the rest of that year.

Sulla's life changed how future leaders acted in Rome. He showed that a person could use an army to gain political power. Famous leaders like Pompey and Julius Caesar followed his example later on. Sulla eventually retired to a private life after his time in government. He died in 78 BC. His many successes and his many battles left a lasting mark on history. Even his son Faustus minted coins to remember his father's great deeds.
