Jugurtha was a powerful king from an ancient land called Numidia. This kingdom was located in North Africa. It covered parts of what we now call Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.

The people of Numidia were often called Berbers. They were known for being great horse riders. Their skilled cavalry helped change how the Roman army fought in wars. Jugurtha grew up in this world of strong leaders and fast horses.

Jugurtha's path to the throne was very difficult and violent. He was the adopted son of King Micipsa. When Micipsa died in 118 BC, there were three people in line to lead. These were Jugurtha and the two sons of Micipsa, Hiempsal and Adherbal. Jugurtha did not want to share power. In 117 BC, he had Hiempsal killed. Later, he fought a war against Adherbal. By 112 BC, Jugurtha had defeated Adherbal and took control of the kingdom.

His rise to power caused big problems for the city of Rome. Jugurtha was very good at using bribes to get what he wanted. He gave money to Roman senators to make them help him. This made the people in Rome very angry. They felt the leaders were being dishonest.

This anger led to the Jugurthine War. This was a long fight between the Roman Republic and the kingdom of Numidia. The war lasted many years and was hard for both sides.

Fighting in the war was a very tough job for the Romans. Jugurtha used guerrilla warfare to stay ahead. This means he used quick attacks and then hid. The Roman infantry was heavy and slow. They struggled against Jugurtha's light cavalry.

Many Roman generals tried to lead the army, but they were not successful at first. Finally, a leader named Gaius Marius took command. He was a very important Roman general who helped change the war.

In the end, Jugurtha was betrayed by his own family ally. His father-in-law was a man named Bocchus I of Mauretania. Bocchus had helped Jugurtha fight, but he eventually changed sides. He handed Jugurtha over to a Roman named Sulla in 105 BC.

Jugurtha was taken to Rome in chains. He was paraded through the streets during a Roman triumph. In 104 BC, he was put in the Tullianum prison and died. His story is still remembered in history and even in old poems.
