He lived during a very busy time in history. This was the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Murat was known for being a great cavalry officer. A cavalry officer is a soldier who fights on horseback. Because he was so skilled, people called him the "First Horseman of Europe." He rose from a simple background to become a king. His life shows how much things could change during that time.

He was born in 1767 in Labastide-Fortunière, France. His parents wanted him to work for the church. However, he chose to join a cavalry regiment in 1787 instead. He worked his way up from a soldier to a sergeant. Later, he became a high-ranking officer. He even became a Marshal of the Empire. This was one of the highest military honors in France.

He became very close to the leader Napoleon Bonaparte.

In 1795, Murat helped Napoleon by moving large cannons through Paris. This helped Napoleon stay in power. Murat later married Napoleon's sister, Caroline Bonaparte. This made him part of the powerful Bonaparte family. He fought in many places, including Italy and Egypt. In Egypt, he led a successful charge at the Battle of Abukir in 1799.

Napoleon gave Murat many important roles and titles.
