In December 1804, Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of the French. He wanted to expand his power across Europe. He won many big battles, such as the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. This victory led to the end of the Holy Roman Empire. He also defeated Prussia in 1806 and Russians in 1807. However, things changed when he invaded Russia in 1812. His army had to make a very hard retreat that winter. This loss weakened his control over Europe.
