This era was led by a man named Napoleon Bonaparte. He became very powerful at the start of the 1800s. His rule lasted from May 18, 1804, until April 6, 1814. He had a very short second period of rule in 1815. After he was defeated again, he was sent to an island called Saint Helena. This empire was different from other French empires in history. It was a special time of big changes for many lands.

Napoleon rose to power through many careful steps. In 1799, he helped lead a group to take control of the government. He first became the First Consul. Later, he became the First Consul for life in 1802.

On May 18, 1804, the Senate gave him the title Emperor of the French. He was officially crowned on December 2, 1804, in Paris. He used the power of his position to change how laws worked. He even put his own family members in charge of different countries.

Napoleon used his army to win many important battles.

In 1805, his troops won a great victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. He also won major battles at Jena-Auerstedt and Friedland in 1806 and 1807. These wins helped him create new groups of states in Germany. He also made a Kingdom of Italy. To keep control, he made his brother Joseph the king of Naples. His brother Louis became the king of Holland. These moves helped spread French influence across the continent.

At its highest point in 1812, the empire was huge.

It had 130 departments and over 44 million people living in France. Altogether, Napoleon ruled over 90 million subjects throughout Europe. His empire included lands in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland. He even had allies like Austria and Prussia for a time. However, things changed after his 1812 invasion of Russia. He lost most of his army during that hard journey. This loss caused his empire to start falling apart in 1814.

Even though the empire ended, Napoleon's ideas stayed behind.

He created the Napoleonic Code to change how laws worked. This code brought more legal equality to many people. It also started jury systems and made divorce legal. These ideas moved into many other countries during his rule. After his final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, France began a new era. This period is known as the Bourbon Restoration. His life remains a major part of European history.
