The Hundred Days was a short but very busy time in French history. It began when Napoleon Bonaparte returned from his exile on the island of Elba. He arrived in Paris on 20 March 1815. This period lasted for about 110 days in total. It ended when King Louis XVIII returned to his throne on 8 July 1815.

This era changed the future of Europe forever.

Napoleon's return happened in a very clever way. He escaped Elba on 26 February 1815 with a small fleet. His ships included the brig Inconstant and several small transports. He landed at Golfe-Juan on 1 March 1815.

As he marched toward Paris, many soldiers joined him. He even met royalist troops and asked them to join his cause. Soon, his small group became a very large army.

While Napoleon was returning, leaders were meeting at the Congress of Vienna. These leaders wanted to decide how Europe would look. They had many different goals for their own lands. For example, Tsar Alexander I of Russia wanted more land in Poland.

The Great Powers were very worried about Napoleon. On 25 March 1815, four major powers promised to send 150,000 men each to stop him. They wanted to end his rule once and for all.

This tension led to a major conflict called the War of the Seventh Coalition. This war included several different battles across Europe. One of the most famous was the Battle of Waterloo.

Napoleon was eventually defeated in this fight. The war also included the Neapolitan War.

After his defeat, Napoleon was sent to the distant island of Saint Helena. He lived there until he died in 1821.

Napoleon's time in power was marked by many big changes. He tried to create a new way for the government to work. He worked with Benjamin Constant to make a new constitution.

This new plan promised more freedom for the press. It also allowed for more people to vote. Even though he lost his empire, these ideas were part of his final attempt to lead France. His story shows how much one person can change the world.
