The Congress of Vienna was a series of big meetings for leaders. They met to decide how Europe should look after Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated.

This happened after many years of war in Europe. The goal was to create a long-term peace plan. Leaders wanted to settle big issues from the French Revolutionary Wars. They did not just want to fix old borders. They wanted to resize the main powers so they could balance each other. This balance was meant to keep the peace.

These meetings worked in a very new way. Before this, leaders sent notes back and forth between cities. That was a slow and hard job. At the Congress, representatives from many nations came to one city at the same time.

This made it much easier to talk and share news. They held formal meetings in working groups. They also had informal meetings at dinners and balls. These parties helped leaders build networks and friendships. It was the first time many nations met like this on such a large scale.

Klemens von Metternich led the meetings in Vienna. He was a statesman from Austria.

He worked with Friedrich von Gentz to create this new way of talking. The meetings lasted from September 1814 to June 1815. Even when Napoleon returned to power for a short time, the leaders kept talking. They finally signed their agreement just nine days before Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. This new system helped nations talk to each other for many years. It even inspired other peace meetings later in the 1800s.

Many different countries sent people to these talks. The five Great Powers were Austria, Britain, Russia, Prussia, and France.

Austria was led by Metternich. Britain was led by Viscount Castlereagh and later the Duke of Wellington. Russia was led by Count Nesselrode under Tsar Alexander I. Prussia was led by Prince von Hardenberg. France was represented by Talleyrand, who worked hard to keep France important. Other nations like Spain, Sweden, and Portugal also joined.

The map of Europe changed a lot because of these decisions.

France had to give up lands it had taken. Prussia gained territory from places like Saxony and the Duchy of Warsaw. Austria gained much of northern Italy.

A new Kingdom of the Netherlands was also created. This was meant to be a buffer between France and the German Confederation. These changes helped create the Concert of Europe. This was a way for nations to respect each other's borders. This system guided European politics until the First World War began in 1914.
