The Holy Alliance was a special group of powerful lands. It linked the rulers of Austria, Prussia, and Russia. This group was also known as the Grand Alliance. It was made to keep things the same in Europe. The leaders wanted to stop new ideas called liberalism. These ideas often asked for more power for regular people.

The alliance worked by having kings agree to certain rules. They promised to rule based on justice, love, and peace. They wanted to act as branches of the Christian community. This meant they would help each other with many tasks. They worked together to stop people from starting revolts. They even worked to stop efforts to make Poland an independent state.

This pact was born after the wars with Napoleon ended. Emperor Alexander I of Russia helped start the whole thing. He was influenced by his adviser, Baroness Barbara von Krüdener. The document was written by Alexander I himself. Two other men helped edit it. They were Ioannis Kapodistrias and Alexandru Sturdza. It was signed in Paris on September 26, 1815.

Many famous people were part of this story. Prince Klemens von Metternich was a leader from Austria. He used the alliance to fight against democracy. In 1818, leaders met at the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle. They wanted to take action against certain university students. Later, in 1833, the Münchengrätz Convention was signed. This kept the alliance strong for a little longer.

Even though the group was strong, it eventually fell apart. It began to fade after Alexander I died in 1825. Later, Russia and Austria had different interests. They even fought during the Crimean War. This made the old alliance stop working. Much later, Otto von Bismarck helped bring leaders together again. He called this new group the League of the Three Emperors.
