The Great Turkish War was a series of major conflicts in Europe. It lasted from 1683 until 1699. This war was fought between the Ottoman Empire and a group called the Holy League. The Holy League included the Holy Roman Empire and Poland-Lithuania. It also included the Venetian Republic and Russia.

The fighting often happened on the western front. The Ottoman Empire faced many different armies at once. They fought the Imperial forces in the west. They also fought the Venetians in the south. They fought Poland-Lithuania in the north.

Because the Holy League had to fight on many sides, their progress sometimes slowed down. This allowed the Ottomans to retake the city of Belgrade in 1690. The war eventually became a stalemate where neither side could win easily.

The war began with a very important event at Vienna. In 1683, the Ottoman army laid siege to the city. The leader of the city's defense was Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg. He led 15,000 troops and 8,700 volunteers.

Many different battles and treaties happened during these years. In 1686, the Holy League captured the city of Buda.

Russia joined the Holy League in 1686 as well. This was the first time Russia joined an alliance with Western Europe. In 1697, there was a very big battle at Zenta. The Holy League won this battle and crushed an Ottoman attempt to retake Hungary.

Finally, the Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in 1699 to end the war.

The war changed the maps of Europe forever. The Ottoman Empire lost a lot of its territory. They gave most of Hungary, Transylvania, and Slavonia to the Habsburg monarchy. Parts of Croatia also went to the Habsburgs.

Poland got the land of Podolia back. Venice received parts of Dalmatia and the Morea. These changes showed that the Ottoman Empire was losing its power in these regions. The war also overlapped with the Nine Years' War, which was another big conflict in Europe.
