The battle was between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League. The Holy League fought for the Habsburg lands. This battle changed who held power in Central Europe for a long time.

The battle happened because of a surprise attack. The Ottoman army was trying to cross the Tisza River. They were moving their troops and supplies across the water. They did not know the Habsburg army was coming.

Prince Eugene of Savoy led the Habsburg forces. His army moved quickly to catch the Ottomans. The Ottomans were in a weak position while they were in the river. This made it a very hard job for them to defend themselves.

Many years of fighting led to this moment. Earlier, the Ottomans had won several battles in the 1690s. Sultan Mustafa II led a large force of 100,000 men from Edirne.

He wanted to take back the land in Hungary. Prince Eugene was a young leader who had already done well in battle. He gathered about 50,000 soldiers to face the Sultan. His army included people from Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Serbia.

The fight was very intense for both sides. The Habsburg army attacked from the rear in a crescent shape. Many Ottoman soldiers fell into the river during the chaos. The bridge they were using became too crowded and collapsed.

The Habsburgs won many things after the fight. They took 87 cannons and 9,000 baggage carts. They even captured the Sultan's royal treasure and his official state seal. This was the first time an enemy had ever taken the Ottoman seal.

This victory helped bring peace to the region. The battle was a major reason the Great Turkish War ended. In 1699, leaders signed the Treaty of Karlowitz.

Because of this treaty, the Habsburgs gained much more land. They took control of Hungary, Transylvania, Croatia, and Slavonia. This changed the map of Europe. It meant the Ottoman Empire no longer ruled much of Central Europe.
