He was born in 1558 as Mihai Pătrașcu. Many people in Romania see him as a great national hero. He is a symbol of unity for his people. This is because he ruled three lands at once. These lands were Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania.

It was the first time these places had one ruler. He even made a special seal to show this union.

Michael's rise to power was very fast. He held different jobs in the government starting in 1588. In 1593, he became the Prince of Wallachia. This was a hard job with many challenges. He had to fight for his right to rule. He traveled to Constantinople to talk with leaders there. He even got help from the English ambassador, Edward Barton. With a loan of 200,000 florins, he became the Prince.

War was a big part of his life. In 1594, he joined a group of European powers. They wanted to fight the Ottoman Empire. Michael led his troops to win many battles. One big fight was the Battle of Călugăreni in 1595.

His army was much smaller than the Ottoman army. In fact, the other army was nearly three times larger. He won the battle but had to retreat. He later won more fights in places like Bucharest and Brăila.

Michael worked hard to bring the three lands together. In 1599, he won the Battle of Șelimbăr. After that, he entered the city of Gyulafehérvár.
