People remember him for being a strong leader and a clever diplomat. He worked hard to keep Moldavia independent from much larger neighbors. These neighbors included the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Hungary. Because of his work, he became a national hero in Romania and Moldova. The Romanian Orthodox Church even named him a saint.

Stephen had to work very hard to protect his land. He used many different ways to keep Moldavia safe. He rebuilt old fortresses and built brand new ones to defend his borders. These strong buildings helped his government stay organized and strong. He also built dozens of stone churches and monasteries. These buildings created a special style of architecture that is unique to Moldavia.

His journey to the throne was not easy. His father, Bogdan II, was the leader before him. In 1451, Stephen's father was killed, and Stephen had to flee to Transylvania. Later, Stephen returned with an army of 6,000 men to take back his home. He won a major victory at the Battle of Orbic to secure his power.

Stephen fought many important battles against powerful leaders. In 1475, he won a huge victory at the Battle of Vaslui against the Ottoman army. This success was so great that Pope Sixtus IV called him the "Champion of Christ."

Stephen's life shows how one leader can shape a whole nation. He dealt with kings like Casimir IV of Poland and Matthias Corvinus of Hungary.
