Wallachia was a land located in Europe. He is often known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula. Many people in Romania see him as a hero. This is because he fought to protect his land from the Ottoman Empire. His father was a leader named Vlad Dracul.

In 1442, Vlad and his brother Radu were held as hostages. The Ottoman Empire did this to make sure their father stayed loyal. Later, Vlad's father and his older brother were killed. This happened after a leader from Hungary named John Hunyadi invaded the land. After these losses, Vlad had to find new ways to rule. He spent many years traveling to places like Moldavia and Hungary. He was looking for help to win back his home.

Vlad eventually became the leader of Wallachia three different times.

He first took control in 1456 with help from Hungary. To make his power stronger, he removed many local leaders called boyars. He also had many fights with the Transylvanian Saxons. These people lived in Saxon villages and supported his rivals. Vlad took people from these villages back to Wallachia. He used a very harsh method of punishment called impalement. This specific act is how he earned his famous nickname.

His battles with the Ottoman Empire were very intense.

While he was in prison, stories of his cruelty spread to Germany and Italy. These stories were some of the first bestsellers in those areas. He was finally released in 1475 by the help of Stephen III of Moldavia. Vlad died in a battle near Snagov in late 1476 or early 1477. His family name eventually inspired the famous vampire Count Dracula. Today, historians still study how he ruled his land.
