During his life, he became one of the richest people in the land. He owned about four million acres of land. This was a huge amount of land for that time. People called him "Turk-buster" because of his many battles. He spent much of his wealth and energy fighting the Ottoman Empire.

To protect his lands, Hunyadi used new ways to lead his soldiers.

He learned about different styles of fighting while serving in Milan. One clever idea was using wagons for military purposes. He also used professional soldiers to lead the way. He did not stop there, though. He also asked local farmers to help defend their homes. These new methods helped him win many early battles.

His military career was full of both wins and losses.

In 1442, he won four different battles against Ottoman forces. One big victory happened in September of that year. It was the first time a European army beat such a large Ottoman force. However, he did lose some battles later on. He was defeated at the Battle of Varna in 1444. He also lost at the second battle of Kosovo in 1448.

Even with those losses, Hunyadi remained a very famous general.

Because of this victory, the Pope asked churches to ring their bells. To this day, many churches still ring bells at noon to remember it.
