This was a new way of ruling after many years of chaos.

Choosing a new leader was a big job for the people. In 1613, a large group of leaders met for a council. This council was called the Zemsky Sobor. They chose Michael to be the Tsar.

At the time, he was only sixteen years old. The leaders chose him because he was a compromise candidate. They wanted someone who could bring peace to the land. Many people felt he was a good choice for the future.

Michael's early life was not always easy. When he was a young boy, he and his mother lived in exile. This happened because a leader named Boris Godunov accused his father of treason.

Later, Michael's father, Feodor, was held as a prisoner in Poland. This changed everything for the family. After wars ended in 1617 and 1618, his father finally returned home. Feodor became a powerful leader named Patriarch Filaret. He helped Michael rule the country until he died in 1633.

During his reign, the Russian lands grew much larger. Explorers and Cossacks moved far into the east. They traveled through Siberia to find new places.

By the end of his rule, they reached the Pacific Ocean. This was a huge step for the country. Michael also dealt with wars against Sweden and Poland. He signed treaties to settle these fights. These deals helped keep Russia independent even though some land was lost.
