This family helped shape how Russia grew and changed. They rose from being noble people called boyars. Being a boyar meant having a very high rank. Their story began long before they became rulers.

Their rise to power started with a marriage. Anastasia Romanovna married Ivan the Terrible in 1547. He was the first crowned tsar of all Russia. This marriage made the family very important. Later, the old Rurik dynasty ended in 1598. This caused a hard time called the Time of Troubles. Many people tried to claim the throne during this period.

In 1613, the family finally took control. A group called the Zemsky Sobor elected Mikhail Romanov. He was only 16 years old at the time. Mikhail was chosen to bring peace to Russia. His grandson was a very famous leader named Peter I. Peter became the first emperor in 1721. He used wars and new rules to make Russia a great power.

Family lines changed many times over the years. The direct male line ended when Elizabeth died in 1762. Her nephew, Peter III, took the throne next. He used his mother's name to stay connected to the family. Because of this, people called them the Holstein-Gottorp-Romanovs.

This name showed they belonged to different royal branches. They still used the Romanov name in official ways.

The Romanov rule came to an end in 1917. This happened because of the February Revolution. Nicholas II was the very last emperor of Russia. In 1918, the Bolsheviks executed Nicholas and his family.
