The Tsardom of Russia was a powerful state that shaped history. It began in 1547 when a leader named Ivan IV took a new title. This title was Tsar. A Tsar was much more than a king. The ruler held total power over the land and the people. This way of ruling is called autocracy.

This period lasted until 1721 when the country became an empire. It was a time of huge growth and big changes for the people.

Many different names were used for this land. Some people called it the Russian land or simply Rus. By the 15th century, the name Russia became more common.

In Europe, many people used the name Moscovia instead. This happened because of old habits or political reasons. Some writers, like John Milton, used both names in their books. Even though names changed, the land remained a central place in history.

Russia grew larger during these years. From 1550 to 1700, the land grew every single year.

One major part of this growth was the conquest of Siberia. The country also faced many hard jobs and wars. Russia fought against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire. They also fought with Sweden during the Great Northern War. These events helped decide how the state would look in the future.

Religion and history played a huge part in how the Tsars ruled. After the Byzantine Empire fell in 1453, Moscow became very important. A man named Philotheus said Moscow was the Third Rome. This meant it was the new center of the faith.

Ivan IV was crowned in 1547 to show this power. He used symbols like the double-headed eagle. This eagle came from the Byzantine court long ago.

Eventually, a leader named Peter the Great changed everything. He took power in 1689 and wanted to make big reforms.
