This made it the third-largest empire in history. Only the British and Mongol empires were larger. Many different groups of people lived within its borders. They spoke many languages and practiced different religions. An 1897 census showed 125.6 million people lived there.

Before it was an empire, Russia was a growing state. Leaders like Ivan III laid the groundwork in the 1400s.

His grandson, Ivan IV, became the first to be called tsar. A tsar is a ruler with absolute power. The state grew by a certain amount every year between 1550 and 1700. Later, Peter I changed everything. He fought wars to make Russia a major European power. He moved the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg.

Alexander I helped defeat Napoleon. Later, Alexander II made a very big change in 1861. He freed 23 million serfs. Serfs were people who were tied to the land. The empire also expanded into places like the Caucasus and Central Asia. It even held land in Alaska from 1799 to 1867.

Life in the empire was not always easy. A terrible famine happened between 1891 and 1892. It killed hundreds of thousands of people. This made many people very unhappy with the government. People also began to like new ideas like communism. In 1905, Tsar Nicholas II allowed a parliament called the State Duma. However, the tsar still kept all the real power. When the First World War began, Russia suffered many defeats.

The empire finally came to an end in 1917. First, the February Revolution caused the tsar to step down. A new provisional government took over for a short time. Then, the October Revolution happened. The Bolsheviks took control and started a civil war.
