The Soviet Union was a massive country that spanned much of Eurasia.

It existed from 1922 until it dissolved in 1991. At its peak, it was the largest country in the world by area. It covered one-sixth of the Earth's land surface. This huge land was divided into many national republics. The largest and most populous was the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The capital city was Moscow, which served as the main center. The government was run by one party called the Communist Party.

How the country worked was very centralized. This means the main government in Moscow made most of the big decisions. The name "soviet" actually comes from a Russian word meaning "council."

These councils first appeared during the 1905 Russian Revolution. Later, workers and soldiers formed their own soviets to share power. After the October Revolution in 1917, Vladimir Lenin led a new government. He wanted to build the world's first communist state. By 1922, many different republics merged to form the official Union.

The history of the nation saw many big changes and hard times. After Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin took power. He pushed for very fast industrial growth. However, his rules also led to a terrible famine in the 1930s. During World War II, the Soviet Union fought a massive war.

The Red Army helped defeat the Axis powers in Europe. This victory was huge, but the cost was very high. About 27 million Soviet citizens died during the war. This made the country a global superpower after the fighting ended.

For many years, the Soviet Union was in a Cold War with the United States. This was a time of great tension between two different ways of living. The Soviet Union led the Eastern Bloc of nations. In 1955, they formed a military group called the Warsaw Pact.

They also competed in a famous Space Race. The Soviet space program achieved great things. They launched the first artificial satellite into orbit. They also sent the first human into space. These wins made the world notice their scientific strength.

By the 1980s, the country faced many difficult problems. The economy was struggling and things felt stuck. A leader named Mikhail Gorbachev tried to fix this with new ideas. He used a policy called glasnost, which means openness. He also used perestroika to try to restructure the system.

However, these changes helped the country fall apart faster. In 1991, the Soviet Union officially dissolved into many independent states. Russia became the successor state, known as the Russian Federation. Other republics, like Ukraine and Kazakhstan, became their own countries.
