The Austrian Empire was a huge and powerful nation in Europe. It lasted from 1804 until 1867.

At its peak, it was the third most populous nation in Europe. It was also the third-largest empire on the continent. This empire was built from the lands of the Habsburg family. The Habsburgs were a famous group of rulers. They grew their power through smart marriages over many centuries. This helped them control many different areas in Central Europe.

This empire was not just one single group of people. It was a collection of many different lands. Each land had its own laws and traditions. People there spoke many different languages. They also practiced many different religions. One important part was the Kingdom of Hungary. Hungary was part of the empire, but it was managed separately. It had its own leaders and its own rules.

This made the empire very complex to rule.

Francis II started the empire in 1804. He did this because of a leader named Napoleon. Napoleon had declared himself the Emperor of the French. Francis II wanted to protect his family's status. He created the title Emperor of Austria for himself. He was also the leader of the Holy Roman Empire at first. However, the Holy Roman Empire ended in 1806. Francis II had to make big choices during the Napoleonic Wars. He fought against Napoleon many times.

A man named Klemens von Metternich became very important later. He was the Foreign Minister starting in 1809. He stayed in power for many years. People call this time the "Age of Metternich." He wanted to keep things stable in Europe. He believed that strong kings should rule. He helped organize the Congress of Vienna in 1815.

This meeting helped Austria become a leading power. He used meetings to help big nations solve problems without fighting.

Things changed again after a war in 1866. This was the Austro-Prussian War. After this defeat, the empire had to change its structure. In 1867, a new agreement was made. This agreement joined the Empire of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary together. This new group was called Austria-Hungary.
