Many different groups of people lived together here. They had many different languages and customs. The empire even built a very large machine-building industry. This helped them become a major power in Europe.

The empire worked as a dual monarchy. This means it was made of two separate countries. These two parts were Austria and Hungary.

The two parts worked together on big tasks. They had a single army for defense. They also had one group to handle foreign affairs. They even shared a finance ministry to pay for these things.

This empire began because of a special deal. This deal was called the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. Before this, Hungary had fought for its independence. They had fought in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848.

The central government in Vienna realized they needed to work with Hungary. They wanted to keep their status as a great power. A leader named Ferenc Deák helped lead the Hungarian side. On July 28, 1867, the new laws were officially approved. This moment gave birth to the Dual Monarchy.

There were many important places and names in this land. The northern and western parts were called Cisleithania. The eastern parts were called Transleithania.

Another region was the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. This area was an autonomous region under the Hungarian crown. In 1878, the empire also took control of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This area was later fully added to the empire in 1908. This addition caused a big political crisis. Many people in the Balkans wanted their own independence.

Eventually, big changes brought the empire to an end. Austria-Hungary fought in World War I as part of the Central Powers. The war began in July 1914.
