history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Austria-Hungary was a multi-national constitutional dual empire located in Central Europe. It existed from 1867 until 1918. This state was also known as the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It was a major power in Europe during its existence. In terms of size, it was the second-largest country in Europe, surpassed only by Russia. It was also the third-most populous country in Europe, following Russia and the German Empire. Globally, it ranked among the ten most populous countries. The empire also developed a massive industrial base. It built the fourth-largest machine-building industry in the world.

The empire operated through a unique system called a dual monarchy. This system joined two sovereign states under one single monarch. This ruler held two different titles. He was the Emperor of Austria and the Apostolic King of Hungary.

The two main parts were Cisleithania and Transleithania. Cisleithania included the northern and western parts of the former Austrian Empire. Transleithania corresponded to the medieval territories of the Kingdom of Hungary. While they were separate countries in international law, they acted as one in many ways. They maintained common ministries for foreign affairs and defense. They also shared a third finance ministry to fund these specific departments.

There were several distinct administrative regions within this union. The Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia was an autonomous region under the Hungarian crown. It established its own status through the Croatian–Hungarian Settlement in 1868. The empire also managed the Bosnian Condominium. After 1878, the provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina came under joint Austro-Hungarian military and civilian rule. The empire later fully annexed these provinces in 1908. This annexation caused a major political event known as the Bosnian crisis.

The empire was formed following a series of historical conflicts and negotiations. Long before 1867, the Habsburgs had become involved in the Kingdom of Hungary. After the Ottoman Empire was defeated at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the Habsburgs assumed the Hungarian throne. Later, the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718 gave the Habsburgs control over all former Hungarian territories. However, many Hungarians wanted more self-government. They fought in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, but the Austrian military crushed the revolt. This led to a period of strict rule from Vienna.

In the 1860s, the empire faced two major military defeats. The loss in the Second Italian War of Independence cost Austria territory in Northern Italy. Then, the defeat in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 changed things further. This war led to the dissolution of the German Confederation. Because the Habsburg emperor could no longer lead the German Confederation, Austria was excluded from German affairs. These defeats forced the central government to change. They realized they needed to compromise with Hungary to remain a great power.

Negotiations for a new system were led by Hungarian political leaders like Ferenc Deák. The goal was to create the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. This agreement allowed the two states to be co-equal in power. On July 28, 1867, Emperor Franz Joseph approved the new laws. This official act gave birth to the Dual Monarchy. From that point on, the two countries conducted unified policies for defense and diplomacy. This structure allowed the empire to function as a single unit on the world stage while respecting the sovereignty of its two main parts.

The empire's end came during the chaos of World War I. Austria-Hungary was one of the Central Powers during the conflict. The war began in July 1914 after Austria-Hungary declared war on the Kingdom of Serbia.

By the time the military signed the armistice of Villa Giusti on November 3, 1918, the empire had effectively dissolved. The political map of Europe changed completely. The Kingdom of Hungary and the First Austrian Republic were recognized as the legal successors. However, several new nations also gained independence. These included the First Czechoslovak Republic, the Second Polish Republic, and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The victorious powers also recognized the territorial demands of Italy and Romania in 1920.
