The Treaty of Trianon was a very important peace agreement. It was signed on June 4, 1920. This happened at the Grand Trianon château in Versailles. The treaty officially ended the war between Hungary and the Allied Powers.

The Allies were the group of countries that fought against the Central Powers. This treaty is famous because it changed Hungary's borders forever. It changed how the country looked on a map.

Making the treaty was a difficult process for many people. First, the Allied Powers prepared the rules for the peace. They did not let Hungary negotiate the terms. Instead, the treaty was dictated to the Hungarian leaders.

This meant Hungary had to accept everything or reject it all. The Hungarian government and Parliament eventually accepted the terms. They did this to restore peace and trade. They also wanted to be able to import coal again.

Before this treaty, Hungary was part of the large Austro-Hungarian Empire. The empire was involved in World War I starting in August 1914.

After the war ended, Hungary declared independence from Austria on October 31, 1918. Neighboring countries like Romania and Czechoslovakia then placed an economic blockade on Hungary. This blockade stopped food and fuel from coming into the country. Later, the Allied powers helped set new lines for the borders. These lines became the official borders of the new Hungary.

Many facts about the treaty show how much things changed. Hungary lost 72% of its former land.

The population dropped from 20.9 million to only 7.6 million people. This left 3.3 million Hungarians living in other countries as minorities. The treaty also made Hungary a landlocked state. This means it no longer had a path to the sea. The Hungarian navy ceased to exist after the treaty. Also, the army was limited to 35,000 officers and men.

The treaty used an idea called "self-determination of peoples." This idea was supported by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. It meant that different ethnic groups should have their own nations.

However, the Allies did not hold votes to decide the new borders. They believed a vote would not change the results much. This decision caused deep resentment and sadness in Hungary. Most of Hungary's borders today are still the same as those set in 1920.
