Kun's journey to power began with his time as a prisoner of war. He fought in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. In 1916, the Russian army captured him and sent him to a camp. This camp was located in the Ural Mountains. While he was there, he learned about Communist ideas. He met other people and began to plan a new way of life. In 1918, he helped start a Hungarian group of the Russian Communist Party in Moscow. He even met the famous leader Vladimir Lenin during this time.

Kun was a very energetic speaker who gave many passionate speeches. He spoke to factory workers, teachers, and doctors to win their support. Even when he was arrested in February 1919, his popularity grew. People saw him as a hero while he was in prison. He used his time in a cell to keep leading his party.

He stayed in close contact with Lenin using a radiotelegraph. This allowed him to get advice and orders from the Kremlin in Russia. However, this new government only lasted for four months. A military attack by the Kingdom of Romania caused the republic to collapse.

Kun fled to Soviet Russia after his government fell. From 1920, he worked for the Communist International in many different roles. He was involved in many different political actions in places like Crimea and Germany. Later, during a time called the Great Purge in the late 1930s, he was arrested. He was accused of being part of a group called Trotskyism. Sadly, he was executed in 1938. Many years later, after Joseph Stalin died, the Soviet leaders cleared his name. This process is called being posthumously rehabilitated.
