Imre Nagy was a very important leader in Hungary.

He was born in 1896 in a town called Kaposvár. His family were peasants, which means they worked on farms. As a young man, he learned to be a locksmith. He also served in the army during World War I. During the war, he was wounded in his leg. He was even taken as a prisoner in Siberia. This was a very long and hard time for him.

Nagy became a committed communist politician later in his life. He lived in the Soviet Union for many years starting in 1930. While he was there, he worked for the secret police. He used a secret name, "Volodia," while working as an informer. After the Second World War ended, he returned to his home in Hungary. He held many different jobs in the government. He served as the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of the Interior.

As a minister, Nagy did things that made people like him. He helped divide land among the farmers in the countryside. This work made him very popular with the peasant families. In 1953, he became the Prime Minister of Hungary. He tried to make life less harsh for the people. He wanted to change some of the strictest rules. However, other leaders did not agree with his ideas. They forced him to leave his job in 1955.

In 1956, a huge event called the Hungarian Revolution began. Many people in Hungary wanted big changes in their country. They chose Nagy to be their leader once again. He promised to bring more freedom to the people. He even said Hungary would leave the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw Pact was a group of countries led by the Soviet Union. This was a very bold and brave choice for a leader to make.

On November 4, 1956, the Soviet Union sent its army into Hungary. This military invasion stopped the revolution and took control. The Soviet leaders arrested Nagy and sent him away to Romania. In 1958, he was executed for treason. For a long time, he was buried in an unmarked grave. Many years later, in June 1989, people finally honored him. They held a large funeral to rebury him with full honors.
