He became a priest in 1910 after many years of study. During his early years as a priest, he worked to help people. He tried to fight local problems like poverty and alcoholism. These early years shaped his views on religion and society.

As time passed, Tiso moved from the church into politics.

He joined a group called the Slovak People's Party in 1918. He worked hard to make the Slovak language and culture strong. He even started a gymnastics group to help people feel connected. In 1938, he became the leader of his political party. This happened after the death of a man named Andrej Hlinka. Tiso was becoming one of the most important men in the region.

In 1939, the map of Europe changed in a big way. The Slovak Assembly in Bratislava voted to make Slovakia an independent country.

This new country was a client state of Nazi Germany. Tiso first served as the prime minister of the new nation. Later, in October 1939, he was elected as the president. He worked very closely with the German leaders during this time. This partnership meant that his government followed the rules set by Germany.

During his time as president, Tiso made many difficult and harmful choices. He collaborated with Nazi Germany to deport Jewish people from Slovakia.

These deportations happened between March and October of 1942. Many Jewish people were sent to concentration camps or killed. In 1944, some people fought back in the Slovak National Uprising. This was a group of people trying to stop the German influence. However, the German military stopped the uprising and many leaders were killed. This led to even more deportations later that year.

After World War II ended in 1945, Tiso's leadership came to an end. He fled to Austria and then to Germany to hide.
