He was born in 1892 in a small village called Stannern. As a young man, he studied law at the University of Vienna. During World War I, he fought in the Austro-Hungarian Army. He served in places like Russia, Romania, and Italy. He even received medals for his bravery during the war. After the war ended, he became a successful lawyer in Austria.

His political life changed as the Nazi party grew stronger. In 1938, he became the Chancellor of Austria for only two days. This happened because the leader of Germany, Adolf Hitler, pressured Austria. Soon, German troops crossed the border into Austria.

Austria then became a part of Germany called Ostmark. Seyss-Inquart was named the governor of this new area. He helped pass laws that took away the rights of Jewish people. He also helped send many Jews to concentration camps.

Later, Seyss-Inquart moved to other places controlled by Germany. He served as a deputy leader in occupied Poland. In 1940, he was appointed the leader of the occupied Netherlands.

In this role, he answered directly to Hitler. He made sure the Dutch economy served Germany. He also controlled many groups, even small chess clubs. The Dutch people did not like his rule. They even made jokes about his name and his limp.

During his time in the Netherlands, Seyss-Inquart did many harmful things. He was an anti-Semite, which means he targeted Jewish people. He made sure Jews were removed from jobs and businesses. About 140,000 Jews were registered, but only 30,000 survived the war. Many were sent to camps like Westerbork or Auschwitz. He also forced about 530,000 Dutch civilians to work for Germany. He authorized many executions of people who resisted his rule.

When World War II ended, Seyss-Inquart had to face justice. He was taken to the Nuremberg trials in Germany. These trials were held to judge leaders for their actions during the war. The court found him guilty of war crimes. They also found him guilty of crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to death by the court. In 1946, he was executed by hanging.
