Wilhelm Keitel was a very high-ranking leader in the German military. He served as the chief of the OKW, which was the high command for all German armed forces. This role gave him immense power during World War II. He was a field marshal, one of the highest ranks a soldier can reach. Keitel was a central figure in how the German military operated. His choices had a huge impact on the course of history.

Keitel's rise to power happened through many different steps. He started as an officer cadet in the Prussian Army in 1901. After fighting in World War I, he worked in many different military offices. In 1935, he became the head of the Armed Forces Office. By 1938, Adolf Hitler changed the military structure and made Keitel the chief of the new OKW. This meant Keitel was now responsible for the army, navy, and air force. He held a rank similar to a government minister.

Many people in the military did not think highly of Keitel. His fellow officers often criticized his personality and his loyalty. They called him a "yes-man" because he always agreed with Hitler. Some even gave him nicknames like "Lakeitel" to suggest he was just a follower. They felt he was more interested in obeying orders than in being a good leader. Even Hitler sometimes spoke about him in a disrespectful way. Keitel was known for being very obedient to the Nazi leaders.

During the war, Keitel was involved in many very serious and harmful events. He signed many criminal orders that led to war crimes. These orders allowed the military to hurt civilians and people who were not fighting. He knew about these plans and did not try to stop them. He even dismissed reports that warned about problems like fuel shortages. In 1940, he was promoted to the rank of field marshal. On May 8, 1945, he signed the official surrender of the German military.

He was charged with several serious things, including crimes against humanity and war crimes. The court found him guilty on every single charge. Because of these crimes, he was sentenced to death. He was executed by hanging in 1946.
