Baldur von Schirach was a high-ranking Nazi politician in Germany. He was born in Berlin on May 9, 1907. His father was a retired cavalry captain and theatre director. His mother was American, which meant Schirach grew up speaking English first. He did not learn to speak German until he was six years old.

Schirach rose quickly through the ranks of the Nazi Party. He joined the party in 1925 when he was only eighteen. In 1931, he became the national leader of the Hitler Youth. This group was for young people in Germany. He led this organization until 1940. He wanted young people to show blind obedience and total loyalty.

As a leader, Schirach used many tools to control the youth. He organized large events like the Reich Youth Day in 1932. These events had up to 70,000 young people attending. He also wrote songs and captions for propaganda books. One book was called "Hitler As No One Knows Him." By 1939, membership in the Hitler Youth became compulsory. Almost eight million children joined the group by that time.

Schirach held many important roles during the war years. From 1940 to 1945, he was a leader in Vienna. He served as the Gauleiter and the Reich governor there. During this time, he was responsible for very terrible actions. He helped deport 65,000 Jewish people from Vienna to concentration camps. In 1940, he also served as an infantryman in France. He was even awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd Class, for this service.

After the war, Schirach had to face justice for his actions. He fled to Tyrol in April 1945 as the Red Army moved forward. He eventually surrendered to American forces. He was then part of the Nuremberg trials. The court found him guilty of crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He served his time at Spandau prison until 1966. He died in 1974 at the age of 67.
