He was born in Mannheim in 1905. Speer studied architecture at several different universities. He studied in Karlsruhe and Munich before moving to Berlin. In 1927, he became an assistant to a man named Heinrich Tessenow. This was a very big honor for a young man. Speer eventually joined the Nazi Party in 1931. This choice changed the course of his entire life.

Speer became a very close friend of Adolf Hitler. He was part of Hitler's inner circle of leaders. Hitler gave Speer many important jobs to do. One job was designing the Nazi Party rally grounds in Nuremberg.

Speer also designed the Zeppelinfeld stadium for large crowds. He used special lighting to make these events look grand. In 1937, Hitler made him the General Building Inspector for Berlin. Speer wanted to turn Berlin into a massive city. He planned a huge boulevard called the Street of Magnificence.

He even designed a giant hall called the Volkshalle. This building was meant to hold 180,000 people.

As World War II began, Speer's role changed again. In February 1942, he became the Minister of Armaments and War Production.

He claimed he created a miracle in making weapons. This helped keep Germany in the war for a long time. However, Speer also used slave labor to help his work. This meant using people who were not free to build things. He set up a task force for making fighter aircraft in 1944. This work was part of the harm done during the war.

After the war ended, Speer had to face the law. He was one of 24 major defendants at the Nuremberg trials.

The court found him guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. This was mostly because of his use of slave labor. He narrowly avoided a death sentence from the judges. Instead, he was sent to prison for 20 years. He stayed in Spandau Prison for most of that time.

He was finally released from prison in 1966.

After prison, Speer became a famous author. He wrote books like "Inside the Third Reich."

Many people read them because they wanted to know the truth. Speer tried to say he did not know about the crimes. He claimed he was just a man who liked building things. People called this the "Speer myth." However, later historians found evidence that he did know more. They showed he was involved in many of the Nazi crimes. Speer died in 1981 after having a stroke.
