Han van Meegeren was a Dutch painter who became famous for a very different reason.

Instead of being known for his own style, he was known as a master art forger. A forger is someone who makes copies of art to trick people into thinking they are real. He lived from 1889 to 1947 and spent much of his life trying to prove his skill. Many people thought he was a hero after World War II. This was because he had sold a fake painting to a Nazi leader named Hermann Göring. His talent for tricking experts was truly incredible.

To make his fakes look hundreds of years old, Van Meegeren used a careful process.

He lived in a mansion called Primavera in France to work on his craft. He bought old canvases from the 1600s to use as his base. He mixed his own paints using raw materials like indigo and white lead. He even used a type of early plastic called Bakelite to make the paint harden quickly. After painting, he would bake the work in an oven. He then rolled a cylinder over the surface to create cracks. Finally, he washed it with dark ink to fill those cracks.

Van Meegeren's journey into art began much earlier in his life.

He was born in Deventer to a history teacher and a French teacher. His father wanted him to study architecture at the Delft University of Technology. Han did study there from 1907 to 1913 and even designed a boathouse. However, he did not want to be an architect. He left his studies to focus on painting at an art school in The Hague. In 1913, he won a gold medal for a drawing of a church interior.

His career was full of both success and hard times.

He became a well-known portrait painter in the Netherlands. One of his most popular original works was a painting called "The Deer." He even painted a deer that belonged to Princess Juliana. But art critics were often unkind to him. They said he was a good technician but lacked originality. They felt he only knew how to copy others. This rejection drove him to create his "perfect" forgeries to prove them wrong.

His most famous trick involved the artist Johannes Vermeer.

Van Meegeren painted "The Supper at Emmaus" to look like a lost Vermeer masterpiece. An expert named Abraham Bredius even called it a "gem." This painting was sold for a huge amount of money. After the war, Van Meegeren was arrested for selling cultural property to the Nazis. To avoid a death penalty, he confessed that the art was fake. He was sentenced to one year in prison. He died of heart attacks less than two months after his release.
