He worked as a decorator and a glazier at the Louvre museum. A glazier is a person who works with glass. He helped clean and fix frames for many paintings. He even helped build the strong protective case for the Mona Lisa. This famous painting was created by Leonardo da Vinci. Peruggia knew how the museum worked very well. This knowledge helped him plan his big crime.

On August 21, 1911, Peruggia went to the Louvre. It was a quiet Monday morning during the summer holidays. He wore a white smock like the other museum workers. This helped him blend in with the crowd. He found the Mona Lisa hanging on a wall. He took the painting off its iron pegs. Then, he took it to a nearby service stairway. He removed the frame and hid the pieces. He wrapped the painting in his smock and walked out.

No one noticed the painting was gone until the next day. A painter went to make a copy but found an empty wall. The museum director was away on holiday at the time. Many police officers searched the museum for clues. They even arrested famous people like the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. For two years, people searched everywhere for the art. Some thought it was a crime of passion. Others thought it was a trick by a con man. The theft became a huge story in newspapers all over the world.

Peruggia hid the painting in his Paris apartment for two years. The police actually visited his home during the search. However, they did not see the painting hidden in a cavity. They forgot to check his name against their fingerprint files. Later, Peruggia took the painting to Italy by train. He wanted to return it to his home country. He contacted an art gallery owner named Alfredo Geri in Florence. This led the police to arrest him at his hotel. The painting was finally shown in Italy before returning to France.

Peruggia said he stole the art for patriotic reasons. He believed the painting belonged to Italy. Some people thought he only wanted to make money. He wrote letters to his father about a coming fortune. After the trial, he was sent to jail for a short time. He later served in the Italian army during World War I. He died in 1925 on his 44th birthday. The theft made the Mona Lisa much more famous than before. Now, millions of people visit the Louvre to see it.
