He used a technique called sfumato, which means soft blending. He did not draw hard outlines around shapes. This helped him create a very smooth look for the skin. He also used aerial perspective to paint the distant landscape. This makes the mountains and paths look far away. The woman sits in a chair with her arms folded.

A note from 1503 by Agostino Vespucci says he was painting Lisa del Giocondo. She was an Italian noblewoman from Florence. Her husband was a silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. The painting might have been a gift for their new home. Leonardo may have kept working on it for many years. He might have continued until 1517. He even took the painting to France when he moved there. King Francis I of France owned the painting after Leonardo died in 1519.

The painting became even more famous after a big event. In 1911, a man named Vincenzo Peruggia stole it. He believed the painting belonged in Italy. The theft caused huge news stories all over the world. The painting was found again in 1914. This event led to many songs and films about the art. One famous song called "Mona Lisa" was recorded by Nat King Cole. It was a very successful song in the 1950s. The painting has been at the Louvre museum in Paris since 1797.

You can see how the painting changed the art world. Other artists even made sketches based on it. For example, Raphael made a drawing of it around 1505. The painting is also a puzzle for scientists today. High-resolution scans show she may have once had eyebrows. These might have faded away over a long time. Some people even think her smile changes when you look at it. This happens because of how our eyes see shadows. It is a wonderful mystery that keeps people looking closely.
