The museum has about 500,000 objects in its total collection. Out of these, about 35,000 works are on display for people to see. The art is split into eight different departments. These include Egyptian Antiquities and Near Eastern Antiquities. You can also find Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities there. Other groups are Islamic Art, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Paintings, and Prints and Drawings.

Most of the 38,000 objects on display come from prehistory to the 21st century.

The palace has a very long history that began a long time ago. King Philip II started building it in the late 12th or 13th century. At first, it was a fortress to protect the city.

You can still see parts of this medieval fortress in the basement. Later, in 1546, Francis I turned it into a home for French kings. He began rebuilding it in the French Renaissance style. In 1682, King Louis XIV moved his home to the Palace of Versailles. This left the Louvre to be a place for royal art collections. The building was changed and made larger many times over the years.

The Louvre became a public museum because of the French Revolution. In 1791, leaders said the Louvre should bring together all arts and sciences. The museum officially opened on 10 August 1793.

At the start, it showed 537 paintings to the public. Most of these were from the kings or the church. The collection grew even more under Napoleon. It was even called the Musée Napoléon for a while. During the Second French Empire, the museum gained 20,000 new pieces. Since then, the collection has grown through many gifts and donations.

Visiting the museum today is easy thanks to modern ways. The main entrance is an underground space under the Louvre Pyramid.

You can also get in through the Carrousel du Louvre mall. For a long time, the museum used Nintendo 3DS systems as guides. These guides had over 30 hours of audio and 1,000 photos. They even used special signals to help people find their way. Today, the museum is a place where anyone can explore history. It sits right in the center of Paris near the Tuileries Gardens.
