It stands west of the center of Paris in the Yvelines department. Today, the French government owns this grand estate. It is managed by a special group called the Public Establishment of the Palace, Museum and National Estate of Versailles. This site is a very popular place for people to visit. About 15,000,000 people come to see the palace, the park, or the gardens every year.

It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its history.

Building the palace was a very long and difficult task.

It started as a small hunting lodge built by King Louis XIII in 1623. Later, Louis XIV decided to turn it into a huge royal residence. He hired many talented people to help him. Architects like Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart worked on the buildings. A gardener named André Le Nôtre designed the famous gardens. A painter named Charles Le Brun helped with the art. They worked in phases from 1661 to 1715 to grow the estate.

History shows how the palace changed over many years.

In 1682, Louis XIV moved his court and government there. This made Versailles the de facto capital of France. Later kings, Louis XV and Louis XVI, lived there too. They mostly made changes to the inside of the palace. However, things changed during the French Revolution in 1789. The royal family and the court returned to Paris at that time. The palace was mostly left empty for a while after that.

There are many famous parts of the palace to see.

One of the most famous rooms is the Hall of Mirrors. This was built by the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1678 and 1681. The palace also has a grand chapel that took many years to finish. Construction on the chapel lasted from 1699 to 1710. There is also a place called the Grand Trianon. Napoleon used this smaller palace as a summer home from 1810 to 1814.

Even the famous Mozart visited and played music there in 1763.

Versailles connects to many important moments in world history.

It was a center for art, science, and power in France. Many kings and leaders met here to discuss important things. For example, ambassadors from Iran and the Ayutthaya Kingdom visited the court. The Hall of Mirrors even hosted the signing of peace after World War I in 1919.
