A poet named Pierre Perrin had a big idea in 1655. He wanted to prove that the French language could be very musical. In 1669, King Louis XIV helped start the institution. At first, it was called the Académie Royale de Musique. A man named Jean-Baptiste Lully became a very important leader there. He helped shape how the music and drama worked together. Under his leadership, the company became a very famous place for performance.

In the past, the opera moved to many different buildings.

One early home was a tennis court called the Bouteille. Later, Lully used a theatre at the Palais-Royal. In 1875, the grand Palais Garnier opened its doors.

Today, the company uses two main theatres for its work. The Palais Garnier is the older building used for ballets. The Opéra Bastille is a modern theatre that opened in 1989. It has 2,723 seats for the audience to sit in.

You can think of the Paris Opera as a living history of art.

It has survived many changes in the government of France. The name of the company changed many times over the years. It went from a royal academy to a national theatre. Even as names changed, the love for music and dance stayed the same. The company still uses the same high skills today. It connects the grand traditions of the past to the modern world.
