People still visit this massive building to see its beauty. Garnier was known for making buildings that looked grand and impressive. He loved to combine different styles of art into his work.

Building the Palais Garnier was a very big job. In 1860, the government held a contest to find a new design. About 170 people sent in their ideas at first. Garnier was one of seven finalists in the second round. His design won because it had beautiful plans and great shapes. The judges said his work had rare and superior qualities. It was a huge success for a man who was not yet famous.

Construction began in the summer of 1861. It was a hard job because workers found a stream underground. The water made the ground too soft to build on. It took eight months to pump all the water out. Garnier used strong cement and concrete to make a safe foundation. This helped the building stay steady even with the water nearby. The opera house finally opened on January 5, 1875.

Many important people attended the grand opening ceremony. This included the King of Spain and the Mayor of London. The building was huge and filled with many decorations. Garnier used metal girders to help hold the building up. This was a new way to build at that time. The metal was much stronger than wood. It helped the building hold heavy marble and stay safe from fire.

Garnier designed many other beautiful buildings too. He worked on the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco.
