He is best known for the Palais Garnier. This is a grand opera house in Paris.

Garnier won a contest to design it. About 170 people entered the first contest. His design was chosen for its beauty and clear plans. Building it was not easy. Workers found a stream under the ground. They had to pump the water out for eight months. This made the ground much safer for the building.

Garnier used a new way to build. He used metal girders, which are strong beams. This was very new at that time. The metal was stronger than wood. It helped the building hold heavy marble. It also helped keep the building safe from fire.

He also worked in other places. He designed the Monte Carlo Casino by the sea.
