It stands on the Champ de Mars. People often call it "La dame de fer," which means "Iron Lady." This nickname comes from the wrought iron used to build it.

Building the tower was a huge job that happened in steps. First, workers built strong foundations in the ground.

A factory made 18,038 different pieces. These pieces arrived on horse-drawn carts. Workers used 2.5 million rivets to join the metal together. Everything had to fit perfectly.

Engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier first thought of the design. They worked for the company of Gustave Eiffel.

They later asked Stephen Sauvestre to help with the look. Sauvestre added pretty arches and a glass pavilion. Gustave Eiffel bought the rights to the design himself. He wanted the tower to be a symbol for France. Construction began in 1887 and finished in 1889.
