Building the tower was a big project for Japan. In the 1950s, the country wanted a monument to show it was recovering from World War II. Hisakichi Maeda wanted a very tall tower for this purpose. The designer was a man named Tachū Naitō. He looked at the Eiffel Tower in France for ideas.

He designed the tower to stay strong during typhoons and earthquakes. The construction team used a lot of steel for the frame. One third of that steel came from old US tanks.

Construction began in June 1957 by the Takenaka Corporation. At least 400 workers were on the site every single day. The tower was finished in 1958 and opened to the public on December 23. It cost 2.8 billion yen to build at that time.

When it was done, it was the tallest freestanding tower in the world. It held this title until the Tokyo Skytree was finished in 2012. The tower is 333 meters tall, but it weighs only 4,000 tons. This is much lighter than the Eiffel Tower.

Today, most people visit the tower for fun and tourism. The base of the tower has a building called FootTown.
